Support Non-Citizen Voting Rights for Portland!
The
Portland Charter Commission is considering non-citizen voting rights for
future local elections. Come speak out in favor of this important
election reform on Thursday, February 11th at 5:30pm at Portland City
Hall in Council Chambers.
Why should non-citizens have the right to vote in local elections?
Many of these people are business owners, they have children in our schools, they are paying taxes, and they have absolutely no say in how their community is run. It takes an average of 10 years and a whole lot of money for someone to gain citizenship, and in the meantime they are paying taxes while having no representation.
Here at the League, we believe that offering these rights will provide incentive for our neighbors, who happen to be functioning members of our society, to get their citizenship and have full voting rights.
Hope to see you
Thursday!!
