Opportunity Maine, or How the League Made History

Opportunity Maine

Making College Affordable for Mainers Who Want It

We're damn proud of our partnership with Opportunity Maine.  We made history, we made a law and we revolutionized the way states can deal with the problem of student debt and brain drain.

Opportunity Maine gives any person who goes to school in Maine, then stays and works in Maine, a tax credit to pay back their student loans.  It's a quadruple play: it attracts more Mainers to go to college, it encourages graduates to stay in state, it brings in money because more graduates equal more tax payers and it attracts new jobs because more graduates also attracts employers.  It's brilliant and much needed.

The League helped found the organization and worked side by side the over 500 volunteers who collected over 73,000 signatures to pass this generation's most innovative and promising solution to the problem of student debt.

And yeah, Opportunity Maine has already been signed into law but we still have an active campaign going.  We now need to make sure that every Mainer knows about our solution and
begins taking advantage of it once it comes online, in January of 2008.
