Are you licensed to ill?

The League joined forces with the Maine's Women Lobby to advance legislation that will provide Paid Sick Days for young service workers and countless other workers who don't currently have the right to be sick.

do you have the right to be sick?

if so, consider yourself damn lucky - 'cause nearly half of the workers in private sector and 79% of low wage earners don't have the right to be sick (more #'s).  instead unjust choices are forced upon these workers: to choose between maintaining their health and maintaining their employment.  that's not right.

many young workers in restaurants & hospitality don't

these are the jobs that are growing in number as corporate globalization displaces manufacturing jobs.  problem is, they don't provide many of the benefits that union organizers won from corporations over the last two centuries, including paid sick days.  for young people working in the restaurant industry, it is not a temporary thing, just "until something better comes along," its a profession.   let's treat it like one.

but they can

a bill in augusta, ld 1454  "an act to care for working families," mandates businesses that employ over 25 workers provide paid sick days.  as right and as just as this legislation is, it won't pass itself.  so we got stategic and joined forces with other groups to win on this issue.  we're finding more and more that what impacts young people also impacts other underrepresented groups.

and we need your help x 75

if you don't have paid sick days you simply must sign our petition.  if you do have paid sick days you'll also want to sign our petition - it's called solidarity and it's a force so powerful it's changed the world before.  if we can deliver 75 petitions to our elected leaders we'll send a powerful message that youth and our allies demand workplace justice.
